Guess who went and got himself scammed.

Well now, the next time I get asked during an interview if I'd ever been the victim of a scam I can say "Well, kind of...."

I had a call today from someone pretending to be my ISP and decided to play along for a bit. "Pride" as they say "comes before a fall". I had no intention of letting them actually access my PC, but went along with them for a little bit. I got sent an email that supposedly had a PIN I needed to give them. After that I messed with them a bit, but then an email popped up saying my account details had been changed. And indeed they had! I tried logging into my account and got the error message saying my password was wrong. Thinking on my feet I decided that the best course of action would be to put in the wrong password a few more times until the account got locked as that would give me time to then call up my ISP. If I couldn't get in, then neither would they. I got through to my ISP on the phone (making sure I was using the right number) and made sure they'd not had a chance to do any damage, then I reset my password. As it turned out I'd switched from BT to EE recently and when they were checking my details they saw that I was being charged for both at the same time, so needed a refund. All's well that ends well I guess, lesson learned. The claim that you have to install software for the scammers to be able to hack you is outdated. They can do it using an image in an email. Now you know too. And if it does happen to you, the faster you can act the better.
