Warning posted in January on a Swedish forum:

HOAX WARNING for possible fraudsters who claim to sell a 2017 Polaris Sportsman 450 EFI 4X4 ATV quad bike and perhaps even more vehicles for less than half the price of what it should cost.

Always ask for frame numbers and proof of ownership and do not pay in advance!

He only communicates in e-mail and in English. He claims that the bike is in Augsburg in Germany and that he will ship it free of charge for a 3-day free evaluation before you need to pay. He wants you to pay the money in advance (escrow) to the freight company holding the money until you confirm that the bike is received. You will probably never see him or her again. If you are unlucky you will also be extorted to pay an unforeseen harbor fee before the bike can be transported home to you.

He claims to be the holder of a company in Germany and the e-mail address looks genuine. He does not indicate a contact phone number in the email.

In September 2018, after getting defrauded, a victim contacted the bank where he wired the money, asking for help to recover the amount lost:

Recently I have bought online a Stiga lawnmower as is shown in the below mentioned transaction details. I bought this machine under the conditions that payment remained blocked until after delivery and positive inspection by myself.
Meanwhile it has become clear that this machine has not been delivered at the agreed date and that this machine will not be delivered at all. This conclusion can be drawn based on the fact the seller is no longer replying to any of my e-mails regarding the question where my machine is. I have requested to refund the payed amount. But no reaction at all.

After payment from my side I learned that the company named “Drano” would take care of the shipment as well as the payment procedure via ESCROW. Thereafter I took notice of the fact that the account name of your bank was not in line with the details of Drano nor ESCROW.
I have to conclude that your bank is doing business with scammers and criminals. It seems your bank is facilitating these criminal activities in which consumers are being scammed.
The whole set up seems very professional and premeditated!
It is my firm believe your bank has not the intention to facilitate these criminal activities. Like in the Netherlands the Irish banks have a “duty of care” as well.
I therefore request you to refund my payment of €2100 to my bank account. The bank account number is already known to you.
When this e-mail is not addressed to the rightful department I assume you will forward this mail within your internal organization. Please inform me when you do, so I can communicate to the people involved.
