I am Ambassador Donald Teitelbaum. I was nominated by President Bush on May
5, 2008, to be the next Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana. The Senate
confirmed me on June 4, 2008, and i was sworn in on July 16, 2008. I served
as Deputy Chief of Mission in South Africa from 2005 - 2008, including a
period as Chargé d’Affaires from late August in 2005 until late July in
2006. I served as a Director for African Affairs at the National Security
Council from 2003 - 2005. My portfolios included Central Africa, East
Africa, Southern Africa, and HIV/AIDS. I served as Deputy Chief of Mission
in Kampala, Uganda, from 2000 – 2003 and Khartoum, Sudan (resident in
Nairobi), from 1997 – 2000. I also served in Beirut, Lebanon
(1996 – 1997), Mogadishu, Somalia (1992- 1994), Georgetown, Guyana
(1988 – 1990), Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1986 – 1988), and the
Department of State’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research (1992 – 1994).
I also studied Arabic from 1994 – 1996 at the Foreign Service Institute in
the US and Tunis, Tunisia.
I entered the Foreign Service in 1985 after earning a Bachelor’s degree in
Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. His professional
recognitions include a variety of individual and group awards, including
the Superior Honor Award, Meritorious Honor Award, and the Award for Valor.
I speaks English, Spanish and Arabic. I am happily married to Julianna
