Hi guys, I got scammed some 15 hours ago and I came across this site on Google.
Great job on the site, it is really heartening to see a community so informative and encouraging.
I got hit on Skype and on hindsight I was pretty stupid and it was very obvious on what was happening. In my defense I woke up little less than 10 minutes before I was chatting the 'girl' up. I am working in Asia right now and an asian girl who spoke decent English was a bit of an exotic rarity.
Anyway they did their thing and they found my Facebook page which also displayed my relationship status. Without missing a beat they went into her page and started being threatening. At that point I was pretty worried though mostly amused (kidnapped and held hostage once in South Africa numbs you a bit; also no family added on fb and my mates would be more amused by any videos than anything. I owned my own business which listed but the page is very secure). The first thought that came across my mind was that I could at least delete my fb if things went badly, but it was my gf that really worried me and I guess that was the leverage the scammers were looking for.
The thing about my gf's page is that it is nonfunctional in that it was already hacked and Facebook staff were lazy by just disabling it. The page's privacy was at least set to the highest setting meaning friend lists, wall postings etc were disable though it was a risk in a way that it was something I couldn't manage directly. So the first thing I did was to 'contact' Facebook in order to pull the page down and hope the scammer doesn't find my gf's current real fb page.
Interesting fact is that I can log onto my gf's other facebook page anytime I want so if anything happens I can react immediately (I am also changing her privacy settings now to make sure).
I also made a third facebook account which I used to check if everything is water tight. As far as I know, other people cannot post on our walls, cannot comment on our postings unless friended and cannot see our occupations. The only way for them to share the video will be to upload the video somewhere (google alert set up already) then to message an acquaintance by FB messanger. I am not too worried about that as google alert is very capable as well as the fact that unfriended messages gets filtered to junk automatically anyways (that and guy friends don't give an ass). I took the extra precaution of deactivating my Facebook account and I plan to use my gf's FB account (scammer doesn't know about the real one) to work and socialise.
I blocked the scammer on Skype already and I really don't think the scammer can get to me unless they can manage to sneak past google alert. I hope I didn't miss anything.
