Avast calls scam victims, Greedy. What do you think of that?

I thought that you survivors of scams might not want to miss this infuriating statement and attitude from Avast, makers of anti-virus, and until they decided to call victims, "greedy," the AV we recommended here. But no more.

Last time it was “stupid”, this time it’s “greedy”.
Early this morning, I was checking my social media feeds and spotted this comment from Avast! on Facebook:

All online scams have one thing in common: They want to tap your greed to get at personal information they can steal. These "phishing" ruses are happening 24/7.

A typical banking scam will ask for information so the scammer can access anything from your credit cards to your checking account. Never reply to these emails.

Here are 3 email scam examples ➤ https://bit.ly/2KCnfM1 via Forbes

Earlier that day I’d pickeds up a copy of a newspaper that had an article on sextortion we’d worked with them on. The last quote from me in that wa “Don’t let shame kill you”. Now I’m seeing this company publicly call victims of “all online scams” greedy. They also posted it on their Twitter feed, but this time the wording was slightly different:

Not “All online scams” this time, but rather “Online scams”. This shows someone took the time to edit the wording before posting it. Due to this, we’ve made the decision to no longer recommend Avast!” antivirus on our site and have removed the links to their download page from both our steps and the “read this first” thread. We’ve also removed their software from our own computers and switched to a different company. It’s a constant struggle fighting the “victims are stupid and greedy” myth, and posts like this only make it harder. Now we’re not denying that some people get caught up in scams due to their own greed, but many become sucked in due to naivety, desperation, even the desire to do good. Are charity scam victims greedy? Are “work from home” scam victims greedy? Are romance scam victims greedy? What about the victims of hitman scams? Grandparent scams? Phishing? “Tech support” scams? I could go on. Dismissing all scam victims as greedy is not only lazy reporting, but puts victims at risk. We at ScamSurvivors refuse to support anyone who makes such sweeping, harmful statements. We should all be better than that.

How can Avast, the self-proclaimed
global #cybersecurity leader for businesses and consumers, protecting hundreds of millions of people under the Avast and AVG brands
turn around and call their customers "greedy?"
How could any security company believe and state such a blatantly ignorant lie like that one, and also insult every internet user, claiming to protect them? Protect them from their own "greed" you mean, Avast? :x

It's an Irish number, and does not appear to be VOIP or mobile. I have never seen any blackmail scammers use Irish numbers before, so I'm betting it's not your scammer. It is either someone dialing wrong number, or perhaps a different kind of scammer or telemarketer. RELAX. Just don't answer unknown numbers as a general rule or send them to voicemail. After a month, you scammer is most likely long gone.

Dear all,
Thank you so much for all your sincere sharings. I realized thatI was scammed for a Hugh amount of money by romance scammers one month ago. He used a fake profile and pretended to be a Christian. He took avantage of my vunlunrable status when I was very desperated for my broken and abusive marriage. I really believed I fell in love with him and he would start a new life with me in my city.
While I realized I was being scammed, I have already lost all my life savings. I took many years to save this amount of money. I prepared this amount of money to buy a new house and school fees for my daughter studying aboard. I always blamed myself why I contacted this scammer via dating website and lured by his everyday love letter. I should not fall in love with a person when we never met and even I sent money to him while his identity is doubtful. I felt I am the most stupid woman in this world. I punish myself and not to spend one cent on myself and I feel very guilty and shameful to have ever had fasinations on this scammer.
I also have nightmares every night and sometimes feel very scared that what had happened to me. I feel very sinful when I fell in love with this scammer while I did not divorCE with my husband. Also I feel I commit sin to fall in love with a scammer.
But I am grateful I finally recocile with my husband since he did not blame me and promises to love me more. He promises to compensate the amount of money that I lost.
I am so grateful to know more in this website. You advise us to forgive myself is most effective way to be healed. I really want to know how I can experience this scam is the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced while I thought this is the most horrific thing happened in my life. It is also a strain in my Christian life that I cannot forgive myself even though I know Jesus has forgave. I feel shameful to share with others my experience but only here.

rj01,
Maybe these will help you to forgive yourself.

Luke 15:3-32
The Parable about the Lost Sheep

Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

The Parable of the Lost Coin
“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Parable of the Lost Son
Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

Dear Slaphappy,
Thanks so much for your kind reminder. I was so touched and it really helps me a lot to understand and exoerience God's love again.
I am so familiar with these scriptures but I can't understand. It was because I always take the role of the older son. I have never allow myself to go astray and beyond God's
expections. This was the first time I violated the biblical teachings and went astray.
I was really desperated for my marriage since my husband always abuse me by insulting and even beating me.
The scammer pretended to be a dedicated Christian and gained my trust and then cheated all my money. Though I lost all my money, I saved my marriage. It is really a miracle. My husband did not blame and also said sorry to me that he made me being cheated. He admitted that these are all his faults because he treated me so bad for a long period of time.
Also God reminds me there is nothing to lose. He will give me back all I lost.
I finally understand what is more important in my life. Not money and not materials but the sincere and true love relationship. I need not to use money to build up my sense of safety and only put money into bank and never use it.
I really thank God for sending you and all persons to be angels to support and help each other to recover from hurts and scams. It is really helpful indeed to read each of your articles. I never feel alone again and I feel I have companions here.
Thanks a lot.
