A relative was recently targeted by a scammer claiming to be a sergeant in the 101st Airborne based in Syria.
They claimed to be a systems analyst doing mapping from a control room in a secret location. They needed money to fly out to my relative's location during an upcoming leave. A jealous money manager supposedly cut off access to their bank accounts.
A few things they did that made the scam feel more real:
- Video called relative on WhatsApp (but video was grainy and video was recorded so they didn't respond - made it seem like a live stream)
- Voice calls, where they used some sort of voice transformation to make their voice sound more cute and feminine
Excuses/Redirections:
- "Sorry my voice sounds weird, it's hoarse from screaming at new recruits"
- "I only have so much money on my phone, so I might have to switch to a new number soon"
- "I just got a new commander who doesn't approve of the leave the previous commander did"
